Treat Tuesday! 07.02.13

It’s Tuesday! I am joining in the fun, created by Niki at Daydream Reader, called Treat Tuesday, where we snap a quick photo of what we are reading and a treat we are enjoying. And thanks to Shannon (aka Ms. Houghton) for the meme logo seen above. Inspired by my Twitter pal, Maria, I’m including what my kids are enjoying as well. Follow all the treat fun on Twitter under the hash tag #TreatTuesday.

The treats —

The weather has been awfully hot here in Seattle the past four or five days, sometimes as much as 20 degrees above the averages we usually have in late June/early July. While temps in the 90s don’t mean much elsewhere in the country, here in no A/C -land we’ve been melting. To beat the heat we’ve hit the pool and been trying to find cool(er) spots to read in our very warm house. And of course don’t forget the popsicles! Here’s our homemade blend!

Creamy Strawberry Lemonade Popsicles

Measurements are rough  . . . 12 oz of honey flavored Greek yogurt, 3/4 cup of frozen strawberries, 1/4 cup of orange juice, 1/2 cup of lemonade. Whirl it up until smooth in a blender. This made enough to fill up 6, 4 oz molds. Pop in the freezer for a few hours and enjoy!

The Books —

Small (age 16 days shy of 9 years, fourth grade)

Kylie Jean: Pirate Queen, by Marcie Peschke. I can’t quite join my daughter’s love of this series, but she’s obsessed with reading all the titles. They’re predictable, which I think she craves some time. Thankfully her reading is pretty varied, as you’ll see below.

Tall (age 11, sixth grade)

Liar and Spy, by Rebecca Stead. She is re-reading this for her summertime book club, which we are hosting tomorrow evening. I did this as a read aloud to both girls and we all adored it. I’ll be curious to see what the other kids think of it.

For Me . . .

Aces Wild by Erica Perl. I’m excited to start this follow-up to When Life Gives You O.J., which I just adored. Start with O.J. before you read Aces Wild, but it’s a great choice for grades 4-8. Small gave both O.J. and this companion book huge thumbs up! You know it’s good when your kid is arranging your to-be-read stack so this one is next in line!

Check out the book-trailer for When Life Gives You O.J.:

  2. Mmmm. I have a Zoku pop maker. I’m feeling inspired to make some popsicles AND read a book RIGHT NOW.
